Pink Titans present about FIRST Robotics at the Toronto District School Board's Eureka! Conference2/17/2023 On February 17, 2023, the Pink Titans presented at the Toronto District School Board (TDSB)'s annual Eureka! conference for STEM educators of the TDSB. Priyan, Hiruni, Tharun, and Mr. Kim introduced the attendees to the FIRST Robotics program, then discussed the benefits of participating for students and supporting adults. As a mentor, Mr. Kim shared his experiences of seeing students grow and develop their skills for global competencies - communication, critical thinking & problem solving, global citizenship & character, collaboration & leadership, and creativity. Speaking to many high school teachers, Priyan, Hiruni, and Tharun conveyed their enthusiasm for learning and applying so many valuable, transferrable skills outside the classroom, based on the experience of the 2023 build season. The students showcased the 2019 FRC robot to the conference attendees, permitting them to test-drive the robot. One of the teachers mentioned that she is planning on attending the Ontario District Humber College Event, in hopes to see a FRC event for considering to start a team. Thanks Mahfuza, Stephen, and the Eureka! conference organizers for the opportunity!
On February 10, 2023, the Pink Titans mentored girls in grades 7 and 8 on coding, building mBots, and empowerment at John A. Leslie Public School. The girls built mBots with screwdrivers and wrenches. The girls then used a Scratch-based platform to code the mBot to move in a variety of directions by the keyboard and emit sounds. February 11 was the United Nations' International Day of Women and Girls in Science. In acknowledgement of this day, the Pink Titans led a workshop with the younger girls, who drew scientists, then reflected on the representation of scientists in the media. Thanks Principal McKeown, Vice-Principal Feng, and Ms. Jabbar for the opportunity!
On February 9, 2023, the Pink Titans presented about the benefits of participating in FIRST Robotics programs to grade eight students, at Donwood Park Public School. Nila, Sarmiya, Tharun, and Mr. Kim shared their experiences in the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC). The grade eight students learned about the opportunities for gaining technical and non-technical, transferrable skills to apply after high school, plus the scholarship opportunities for participating in the FRC and the FIRST Tech Challenge. The grade eight students also test-drive the 2019 FRC robot and a FTC kit robot. Thanks Donwood Park P. S., President Ellis, and Senior Mentor Keenan for the opportunity!
