Six Week Build
David & Mary Thomson Collegiate Institute, Jan. 5 to Feb. 19, 2019
For six weeks from Jan. 5 to Feb. 19, the Pink Titans designed, built prototypes, programmed, and built the robot for the 2019 game of the FIRST Robotics Competition - Destination: Deep Space. The first few days were spent reading the rules of the game very carefully. The following week was spent brainstorming ideas on how the team can build a robot within the team's means for scoring points. Ideas were brainstormed on whiteboards. One idea for lifting the robot to the Level Three platform involved building a foot for pushing the robot up. This idea was abandoned in consideration of more doable idea for transporting the robot onto the Level Two platform. However, it's was very cool to learn later that FRC 1114 - Simbotics had a similar idea to build a foot!
By week two, drawings via computer-Aided Design (CAD) of cargo ball intake and three-stage elevator were made. Calculations were made to determine if the robot can ascent onto the Level Two platform via running up the ramp (also known as the "level two yeet"). Prototypes of the intake were made as well.
Over the next several weeks, the team worked after school and on weekends to complete the build. By the last week, the robot was built for test-driving and practicing in preparation for the first event - the Ontario District - Ryerson University Event.
