2023 FRC Build Season
David & Mary Thomson Collegiate Institute. January 9 to April 5, 2023
From January 9 to April 5, 2023, the Pink Titans designed, constructed, and programmed their 2023 FRC robot. The team, along with all other FRC teams around the world, received the game rules for the 2023 CHARGED UP season on Saturday, January 7. On the first Monday, the team met and brainstormed ways for the robot to score maximally in the game. Asad, Muji, and Aaditya, alumni of the Pink Titans, led the discussions. The decision was made to build a robot with horizontal wheel intake to pick up cones and cubes, as well as a cascading elevator to raise the game pieces to the upper nodes to score maximally. (The team had prior seasonal experience in building both intakes with wheels and a cascading elevator.)
Over the next few weeks, the team designed the robot using computed-aided design (CAD), cut metal parts, and ordered new control components. For the first time in the team's history, the Pink Titans decided to build a robot with a swerve drivetrain. Once it was build, students practiced driving the swerve drivetrain to become efficient at controlling it. Also for the first time in the team's history, parts of the robot were cut using a computer numerical controlled (CNC) router. These parts were produced at local manufacturing facilities and the school of FRC 4946 - Alpha Dogs. Most of the students were brand new to the FRC experience, so many different students were involved in the building of the chassis, wiring the electrical components, prototyping the intake, assembling it, as well as assembling the cascading elevator.
After the first event at Newmarket, the team decided to reiterate the design of the intake to secure the cube and cone more completely. As well, the placement of the intake was moved to a different part of the cascading elevator. These constructs were made over several weeks in preparation for the Humber College and Ontario District Championship events.
